4. With reference to two areas of knowledge discuss the way in which shared knowledge can shape personal knowledge.

4. With reference to two areas of knowledge discuss the way in which shared knowledge can shape personal knowledge.

The IB ToK Guide (first assessment 2015) has a fairly detailed section broadly outlining definitions of “shared knowledge” and “personal knowledge”, this section is labelled ‘Knowledge in ToK’. It is strongly recommended that students refer to this section.

How you define shared and personal knowledge will, obviously, greatly influence how you respond to the question. I am broadly defining both terms through the area of Human Sciences, as such I define shared knowledge as a socio-cultural knowledge, broadly along the lines of a set of norms, values, signifiers and cultural mores. I am defining individual knowledge as knowledge acquired through individualised experience and perspective (such as memories, perceptions, emotions etc). These are neither the correct, nor only definitions of these terms

There needs to be a focus on defining shared and personal knowledge. Beyond merely definitions these terms will need to be explored, and in exploring them students will undoubtedly start to consider different types of knowledge (e.g. personal knowledge, group knowledge, privileged knowledge etc).

The command term is to ‘Discuss’ therefore looking at the knowledge issues in a number of different ways.

The Knowledge Questions arising from this PT will very much depend on how the terms shared and personal knowledge are defined. Such knowledge questions arising from the definitions that I have outlined could be:

1) How can we use the scientific method to establish the direction of causation in development of shared and personal knowledge ?

2) Would it be possible to group ways of knowing in order to establish a shared knowledge which supersedes individually perceived experience ?

3) If we accept an external shared knowledge exists are we also accepting an external objective reality ?

4) How do we situate the ‘breakthrough’ moments of innovators within a shared knowledge system ?

5) How might we establish whether paradigm shifts are more likely in a loose shared knowledge system ?

The range of KQ’s is near endless, these are just examples designed as starters for student thinking.

As in most questions the Areas of Knowledge that you choose to reference will have a significant influence on the content and direction of your essay. If I were to be writing this essay I would choose Human Sciences and The Arts as my AoK’s for reference. This is not because these are the best Areas of Knowledge to use, it’s just that they’re the most interesting areas for me personally in relation to this question. You may choose to use very different AoK’s and come up with a far better answer than me.

Rather than write a section on Human Sciences and section on the Arts separately I prefer to take themes from the KI (how shared knowledge shapes personal knowledge) and exemplify each theme through the AoK’s.

Themes.

How shared Knowledge forms personal knowledge.

Socialisation / Culturization.

The most obvious ways in which shared knowledge forms personal knowledge in the human sciences are through processes of primary and secondary socialisation and culturization. Evidence for Primary & Secondary Socialisation could be drawn from a wide range of research including Bandura’s Bobo Doll research, Vygotsky’s Theory of Social Development, Maccoby’s theory of sex role development or Bem’s research into Gender Development. This is really only the tip of the ice-berg of research in this area.

Conformity.

Another area in which Human Sciences have shown empirically that shared knowledge shapes personal knowledge is through the social psychological study of Conformity. Almost any research from this area will demonstrate the link, a starting point might be the classics: Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison, Asch’s Lines Research, Crutchfield .

Another area of interest here might be the research into the Psychology of Obedience: research such as Milgram’s Obedience research or Hofling’s study of nurses.    This research shows that social norms influence personal knowledge & therefore individual behaviour. However, it could be argued (as counterpoint) that the ‘individualised knowledge’ of difference (maybe embarrassment etc) is changing behaviour, which then effects the whole group / shared knowledge.

Artistic Movements.

A good place to start explaining how shared knowledge influences personal knowledge with references to The Arts is in the growth and spread of Artistic Movements. Students could explore how socio-cultural changes at a particular place & time fed through to changes in the artistic world (e.g. The Renaissance) this then fed through to a change in which individuals saw / understood their world, ie shared knowledge shaping personal knowledge.

Cultural Memes

Another example from The Arts may be the germination and spread of cultural memes (including internet memes) – interesting article here. It could be argued that the quick spread of a meme demonstrates the influence of the shared knowledge system over the individual knowledge system. However, in counterarguments students may want to consider the direction of causation: it could be argued that it was individual knowledge which led to the creation of the original meme.

Ambitious ToK students could discuss Roland Barthes book S/Z which looks at the codes of meaning in Balzac’s book Sarrasine. Barthes looks at how the different processes of encoding are either individually or collectively produced and consumed. The book is a good exploration of the bi-directional nature of shared and individualised knowledge. A critique of S/Z

Personal Knowledge is dominant over shared knowledge.

We could look to apparently innate behaviours to argue against the question, this argument would be based on the premise that inherited behaviours are fairly fixed, and free of social influence. Clear examples of this is seen in the genetic influences of attraction. This could be cited using Wedekind’s Sweaty T Shirt research (from the Human Sciences AoK).

Sweaty T-Shirt Research

This research was developed from the evolutionary psychology perspective on attraction, the research details are here, essentially Wedekind’s research shows that women are most attracted to men whose major histocompatibility complex were the opposite of their own. Similarly Martha McClintock at the Uni of Chicago has demonstrated that women are more attracted to men who smell like their father. These research findings could be used as evidence for an innate ‘personal’ knowledge, which is to a greater degree unaffected by shared (social/collective) knowledge.  As such this evidence is arguing counterpoint to the question. Other findings from evolutionary psychology could also be used (e.g. neurological motivation & reward systems in use of social media, or satiety systems in formation of eating disorders etc).

In terms of The Arts it could be argued that moments of deep innovation become genre breaking (or ‘mould smashing’). These moments are the product of an individuals autonomous creativity, fairly independent of their social environment. Such people may be described as having a creative personality. Students could consider the ‘birth’ of significant artistic movements (such as surrealism), or the career of those deemed to be eccentric idiosyncratic artists, arguing that their contribution was to the shared knowledge, rather than taken from the shared knowledge.

Shared and personal knowledge are inseparable, and possibly the same thing.

It could be argued that the relationship between shared and personal knowledge is bi-directional, with each sphere shaping the other. There are a plethora of examples which could be drawn from both Human Sciences and The Arts. I will focus on a few of my favourites here. I am sure that you can find your own, more pertinent examples.

Human Sciences.

Jung’s Archetypes & collective subconscious

Carl Jung argued that we share a set of common psychological meanings, he called these ‘Archetypes’, which are models of how we understand phenomenon (for example there are archetypes for mother, persona, the self, father, child etc). So, the archetypes are a shared public knowledge which exist in the personal knowledge sphere.

The Archetypes are said to exist within the Collective Unconscious, this is the unconscious that all members of a particular species share, it is the aggregate set of memories of that species. Again, this is a shared public knowledge which is experienced at a personal level.

Bio-Psych – Neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity is a term used to describe the influence of the external environment upon the physical neurological structure of the brain, including both synaptic changes and neural pathways. The process shows that external (shared) knowledge can change internal individualised experience (which could be a definition of personal knowledge), and the opposite direction of causality is also demonstrated. There are numerous research studies which can be used to show this relationship, I would suggest that this is a good article in which to find the ‘classic’ evidence.

Interpretation of art.

From The Arts students could look at the interpretation of art in order to show a bidirectional relationship between shared knowledge and personal knowledge. This discussion might look at the relationship between the viewer / subject and the the object. This process involved the bringing of social/shared knowledge to the interpretation, and the individualised nature of interpretation / experience. There are numerous texts & essays on this relationship, however I would recommend John Berger Ways of Seeing as a starting point.

I think that there is wide scope throughout this question for discussing the effects of digital technology, particularly as applied to social media. Each section could be written with reference to technology & social media – this could also be linked to Human Sciences & The Arts (or to any other AoK as needed). Some possible reading on this may be texts by Marc Prensky on different use of the internet for work, leisure and education.

As I explained at the beginning, this is just my interpretation of the question, and my suggestions as to what could be included. Use this as an example of how the question could be answered – a suggestion for what an essay may look like, rather than as a structure for an actual essay. I would suggest that you develop your own interpretation and suggestions for content, you’ll find it much easier to write to your own ideas.

Please feel free to share comments and thoughts in the comments box below. Remember “sharing is caring”, and “lack of communication is unhealthy”.

Best of luck Tok’rs..

Daniel

A quick note: There are far fewer external links in this post, and in posts henceforth. When writing this post I inadvertently linked to an unauthorised site (little did I know this at the time). The blog was then closed down for 48 hrs before WordPress kindly gave me an opportunity to rectify the problem. As such I will now be much more careful with the links that I post on the blog. 1. Hey! I am a bit confused between what shared and personal knowledge is. Could you please define them for me from your point of view so that maybe I can consider this as my title?

    1. I think that exploring the various definitions yourself will help you to decide whether this is the right essay for you. Broadly I define shared knowledge as social constructed & communicated knowledge (e.g. culture, social norms, media semiotics etc), whereas individual knowledge is personalised, internal and individualised knowledge (e.g. personal experiences, perceptions, schema, values etc)

  2. Great article! Some really helpful points in there.
I just seem to have a different definition for ‘shared knowledge’ compared to you. My ‘go-to’ definition for shared knowledge is:
“Knowledge that can be the work of a group of people working together either in concert or, more likely, separated by time or geography. There are socially established methods for producing knowledge of this sort, norms for what counts as a fact or a good explanation, concepts and language appropriate to each area and standards of rationality.”

That definition is from the TOK guide and it seems more likely to be referring to subjects like Physics and IT. My only concern is whether I can use Physics as one AOK and compare it to the idea that people are bound by their culture or society (personal knowledge), leading them to become reluctant in their acceptance of the shared knowledge (in this case Physics).

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Many thanks for the contribution Akbar, that’s what these posts are all about. I think that your proposed structure could be achieved with careful writing, I suppose you would be placing Physics within the AoK Physical Sciences (or Mathematics?), and then your AoK for personal knowledge (culturally defined experience) would need to be defined. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which AoK constitutes areas of personal knowledge in your definition – I suppose you could look at Ethics, History or Human Sciences.

      1. Thanks for the useful feedback. I’d just like your opinion on using ‘Religious Knowledge Systems’ as the proposed area of personal knowledge for my essay. It’s one that I’ve rarely seen used as an AoK, but my TOK teacher had no issue with it since it’s also clearly mentioned in the TOK Guide.
I’m hoping it fits in well with the aforementioned idea (previous post) that people can become reluctant in their acceptance of shared knowledge (Physics from N. Sciences) if they belong to a certain RELIGIOUS group (religious knowledge systems).

  3. I am not sure what you mean by “the archetypes are a shared public knowledge which exist in the personal knowledge sphere”. How does that support the notion that shared knowledge and personal knowledge shape each other?

    1. It’s Jungian Theory, just one of the ways that I would answer the essay. It’s not meant to be a model, nor right, answer. So, if this example doesn’t work for you please use one that does help you to show that both shared & personal knowledge are mutually inclusive systems. I think it is important that learners find examples which work for them personally.

  4. I am not really sure about the knowledge questions. could this be a question? : how can personal knowledge turn into shared knowledge?

    1. Hi Alex, your proposed question is essentially the basis of the essay. It would be helpful for you to detail elements of this fundamental question, try to think of different contexts, aspects or means by which personal knowledge can become shared knowledge. Best of luck with your essay.

    1. Hi Alex,

of course you can use Natural Sciences as an AoK. For examples to use just look across the discipline and find examples which work for you. It may be a good idea to draw upon the things that you have studied in Grp 4 of your IB Diploma.

    1. Hi Donna,

yes Art is a particularly good AoK to look at in this question. You can explore the inter-relationship between an individual’s perceptual interpretation of art and the shared influences on the artist when s/he created the piece. You could also look at how artistic genre (shared knowledge) are individually understood, modified and reapplied by individual artists.
Enjoy writing your ToK Essay !
      Daniel

    1. Ethics could be looked at through exploring personal ethics with social morality. You could consider the direction of causation, changes in ethical understanding when there is a personalised consequence in comparison to a social consequence. Consider issues such as climate change etc

      1. wouldn’t that invert the question? how personal ethics causes changes in shared ethics, would simply be addressing how personal knowledge affect shared knowledge, and cause my essay to go off track?

      2. Hi Francis, your answer very much depends upon your structure, if you can use personal knowledge to shared knowledge as part of a counterclaim then do so. However, if it is illogical within your structure, and takes your essay off track then certainly don’t. You are the best judge of your essay structure.

  5. This is very useful! However, I don’t know how to formulate my KQ, so can you somehow help me? Any guidance on where to start?

  6. Very good article. I thought about relating it with natural science, specifically the evolution theory of Darwin and how did religion (shared knowledge) changed his personal knowledge. Do you think is a good idea? Which ways of knowing should I use and how should I relate them? Help please!

    1. A very interesting approach Alex, which with the right treatment is certainly a legitimate way to tackle the question. As for which WoKs to use, it very much depends on the real life issues that you are drawing upon. Which WoKs did Darwin use?

  7. Hello! First off, thank you for writing this, as it cleared up some confusion I had about the title and gave me some ideas. I plan on writing my TOK essay on this title. I was wondering what kind of real-life examples I can give? I’m using religion and art as my two AOKs, though I’m tying history into art (as depicted by literature, is my reasoning). I need some help finding real-life examples. Thanks!

    1. With religious Knowledge systems you can use Faith as a wok, so you could look at ways in which Faith is developed as a personal experience, and contrast that with ways in which faith is developed as a shared experience. For example you could draw upon some good examples of contrasting home churches with evangelical churches. Just a starting point, hope it helps

  8. Hi Mr. Trump!
Thank you so much this really helped me my knowledge issue and idea generation. My KQ is To what effect do our WOK effect shared knowledge influence on our personal knowledge?
i was wondering for my RLS of my AOK of Art could be Hitlers paintings and how the shared knowledge of Hitler painting the painting affects the personal knowledge the viewer has due to their emotion and reasons. In terms of human sciences could this KQ be applied with the idea of “memes”? could you expand on digital technology and social media in relation to the arts and human sciences as i am really stuck on finding a RLS or issue.
    thank you so much!
    Sophie Walker

    1. Hi Sophie, your RLS is a really good example of ToK ideas being applied to real world. I think the link to Internet Memes is also really insightful. You may want to look at the clarity of the wording of your KQ. Well done! Great thinking!

  9. Very useful article! However, can you give me ideas about ethics for my AOK? and what should i write for the counterclaim?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Carla, if you’re using Ethics as an AoK there are a whole range of examples that you could use. For example you could look at the complexities of deontological dilemmas : do the ‘rules’ of judgement arise from shared knowledge or personal interpretation ? Real Life Situations to draw upon could be decisions made about healthcare spending, health & safety laws, or actions we know to be detrimental to the environment etc

  10. Would an acceptable KQ be
1 Are there other types of knowledge besides shared and personal knowledge?
    or
2 Can shared knowledge exist without personal knowledge?

  11. Hi Mr Trump, can i use ethic’s perspective to be my KQ/ issue. that ethics shaped our personality and thoughts that is taught by family and society. and also facing the LGBT issues in society? thanks!

    1. Hi,
thanks for the compliments. If you’re looking for real life examples for Art and Religion I can immediately see the use of relics to demonstrate faith as a good RLS, or the changes in artistic genres during the Renaissance, or an individual’s experience of epiphany…,
      hope that helps,
      Daniel

    2. Yes, ethics would be a good area to use. You need to develop a specific KQ – this is an area of knowledge production which is unclear / unresolved – it is around this question that you will build the structure of your essay.

  12. Hello Mr. Trump, I liked the example of neuroplasticity but I cannot think of a good (not obvious) real life situation. I don’t want to fall on that obviousness of examples nor of conclusions. All I though of was related with a user getting to know a new knowledge, but this is not affecting its personal knowledge, I mean he is only like receiving it.
    Vincente

  13. Dear Mr.Trump
i’m using all three themes in which you have stated into my tok essay, and i have a small problem here considering berger’s way of seeing, i can’t find the link between shared knowledge and personal knowledge, he gives ideas abt how sexual objectifiaction and media influence our view of art, and i think that’s how shared knowledge shapes knowledge, but how about can i state that they’re interchangeable and the same thing?? any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

    1. You have some excellent ideas, and well done for integrating Berger’s work. For objectification to occur there must be a subject, the object under observation will change the subject purely by the very act of observation. As such not only does a subject define an object, but an object also changes a subject.

  14. Hello. Your article is very useful.
I would like to ask if it is right to use history as my second AOK . Is it correct to use 2 leader that shaped the personal knowledge of the majority either positively or negatively?

    1. Hi, of course you can use history as your second AoK, and citing a leader who influenced shared knowledge is a good way to explore this question. I’m not sure that describing more than one example of a leader shaping shared knowledge will add to your essay.

  15. I would like to ask you a few questions in detail. I would rather do this in the private in the feat of plagiarism, etc. Is it possible, if I could drop you an email.
    Thank you

  16. Would this be an acceptable KQ?

“How do the various perspectives people hold of Arts affect the ethical knowledge the gain?”

I am also quite unsure of how to start the essay. The areas of knowledge I have chosen for the title are History and Arts, and I really found the idea of using artistic movements as an interesting way of explaining how it shapes or influences people’s views and perspectives. But I am unclear as to what my thesis would be.

    1. I can see where you’re going with this KQ, it needs a little more development IMO. I think you need to develop your concept of ‘ethical knowledge’, what do you mean by this term ? Are you referring to a set of ethical beliefs, or to an ethical process of knowledge acquisition ? You will just need to make this clear in your KQ, and the body of your essay.

I admire your determination to take on such a big KQ !

  17. it says that you should refer to two AoKs. But can I use one AoK to support my claim and the other AoK to give an example of counterclaim? Or should I provide claim and counterclaims for both AoKs?

    Thank you!

    1. It very much depends upon how you structure your essay. It is probably safer to provide claims & counterclaims for each AoK as this will provide a richer exploration of the AoKs.

  18. Great article! I have a trouble trying to explain that personal knowledge and shared knowledge have a cyclical relationship, how shared knowledge feeds into personal knowledge, and personal knowledge also then feeds back into shared knowledge. Would this be a suitable way to explore the relationship between these two knowledge systems?

I am looking at the AOKS of Art and Natural Science to explain this, but having trouble trying to support this claim through a RLS.

    1. I think the cyclical relationship between shared and personal knowledge systems is a very good way to explore this question. There are many RLS that you could draw from the Arts and Natural Sciences. E.G from the Arts you could look at the development of Impressionism, and then the development of Neo-Impressionism and Pointillism by Seurat which in turn influenced the post-impressionist movement (Van Gogh, Manet etc).

  19. Thank you so much for the article!! It really helped me in understanding what the title actually wants me to write about. I am writing my TOK essay now and I’m struggling with my Introduction and defining the key terms in the title such as ”shape”. What exactly would be a good way to tackle this question and explain what they mean with that in the title? Because I’ve already given a detailed definition of ‘shared’ and ‘personal’ knowledge.

    Kind Regards,

    1. I think how you define “shape” very much depends upon your KQ & KC’s, you may not even need to define the term, it all depends upon how you are tackling the question. Have you written an essay plan ? What is your KQ ?

  20. Great blog! I was wondering if you had any views or sources you could help me find for shared knowledge of ethics influencing the personal knowledge of right and wrong? Thank you!

    1. The amazing book Infidel: My Life by Ayaan Hirsi Ali immediately comes to mind, as does If This is a Man by Primo Levi. Oh so many examples, so many books and sources fit this basic typology. How about Long Walk to Freedom by Mandela, or The Testimony of Steve Biko by Steve Biko, or Hitch-22 A Memoir by the late & great Christopher Hitchens, or The Ethics of Ambiguity by Simone de Beauvoir. These are just a few of my favourites, you should choose the texts which have spoken to you as you’ll be able to write about them with more depth (and you won’t have to read any extra books!)

What are you reading at the moment ? Whatever it is you will be able to fit it to this basic framework. The process of shared ethics influencing personal ethics, which in turn shape the shared ethics is the basic human story – it’s the only story that there is, underlying all other narratives. Such a rich seam to mine, enjoy !

  21. For this prompt, do Ways of Knowing have to be discussed? For instance, if I chose Human Sciences and Ethics as my two AoKs, how could I relate WoKs? Would it suffice to simply elaborate on various studies/theories in the two AoKs which support my claim that personal knowledge is shaped by shared knowledge?

    1. WoKs are not strictly required by the question, so yes you could just explore the AoK’s. However, a good essay will contain all elements of the ToK framework, as such you should include reference to WoKs. I would start from the position that specific WoKs are more likely to be used in the process of knowledge acquisition in one AoK in comparison to another.

  22. Hi! thanks for your sharing! It’s really useful and I have understood more about this question. However, I am still not sure about the KQs and KCs. Actually I have already written the essay, but my teacher told me that my KQs and KCs were not clearly shown, so I probably have to make changes on it…
Besides, any opinions on how I could make my essay more argumentative? Since my teacher said mine was too descriptive…
    Thanks!

    1. Without reading your essay it’s very difficult to say how you can “make it more argumentative”. I would recommend that you ask your teacher to clarify KC’s & KQ’s, and what s/he means when they ask you to “make it more argumentative”.

      1. He told me my claims are not explicit, and the essay is mainly descriptive…
Well actually do you provide an essay commenting service or something like that? So that you can tell me more about it?

  23. I’m confused in whether paradigm shifts demonstrate shared knowledge shaping personal knowledge or the other way around. The thing is that it can be seen in both ways, so I want to know you opinion on which side I should argue?

    Personal –> Shared
The breakthrough idea from innovators caused people to rethink their current knowledge, thus showing how personal knowledge of inventor/innovator has shaped shared knowledge of society.

    Shared –> Personal
The new accepted shared knowledge of that innovator spreads, continuing to affect personal knowledge of other people, changing their current way of thinking which was acceptable in the past, but not after the recent discovery.

    1. Your question is the question, so to speak.
You have perfectly summed up the structure of argument within this question. Obviously there’s no single correct answer. I would recommend that you look at a couple of paradigm shifts and try to find cases which exemplify both sides of the debate.

  24. Thank you so much for the article!! It really helped me in understanding what the title actually wants me to write about.
I wanted to ask you if it is right to use Biology and Business & Management or Economics as my AOK and can you help me find some examples for my AOK?
    Thanks 🙂

    1. Hi, the Areas of Knowledge are defined by IB (you can find them in the ToK Guide, they include Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, Maths, The Arts etc). Biology would come under Natural Sciences, and Business & Management / Econs would come under Human Sciences. You certainly could draw your real life examples from the subjects.

  25. Hi Daniel,
This was super useful for my tok essay!
But I am having problems with finding a counter claim to conformity (Soloman Ash’s experiment).
    Please HELP!

    Thanks (:

    1. Hi, for counterclaims to Asch’s findings on conformity you need to look at reasons why some people don’t conform (in Asch’s research 25% of Ps never conformed). However, remember this is a ToK essay not a Psychology essay, therefore you need to consider the difficulties in establishing knowledge which explains why some people don’t conform.

  26. I have been told to answer this question specifically relating it to two of my academic topics.

So I shall tackle restoration period theatre (and Shakespeare) and try to demonstrate how I believe knowledge was actually a bi-directional personal and shared process but I’m struggling with my second example – history.

Is Hitler a simple example of where sharing his personal “knowledge”/perception of the world to society as a whole, is basic personal knowledge (negatively) influencing shared knowledge, or is there some sort of bi-directional aspect?

Are there any other factors that you think would specifically add to the answer.

    Many thanks

    Roberto

    1. Hi, I think that your use of restoration theatre is very interesting, an excellent example from a time when knowledge wasn’t understood in the same way as today.

History is also a good AoK to use to answer the question, however rather than focussing on specific historic examples think about history in terms of the process of labelling, recording and interpreting history (historiography). Think about what type of experience is labelled as historic knowledge, whilst other experiences are not given this label, and why this may be.

  27. hello sir, actually u have answered all my questions after reading all these comments … but I have one more doubt about my real life example .. the knowledge question…..is it really possible to have knowledge of a culture in which we have not been raised?……. m really confused will u please help me?

    1. This is one of the biggest questions of Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology. You may want to look for sources which discuss Emic and Etic understandings of culture. Both situations have particular strengths and consequent weaknesses.

      1. Hey there! I just got my results yesterday, i got a B in TOK essay! Thanks for your help!

      2. Congratulations!! Well done, B is an excellent result, you deserve to be very proud. I hope that your overall results get you onto the next stage of your education. Many thanks for posting this, it is very much appreciated.

  28. Hi Daniel! thanks your article is very helpful. I am having trouble with the KQ. Could you please let me know if this is a good KQ, what level you believe it is on the Criteria A of the assessment rubric and ways I could improve it. Thanks much appreciated.

KQ: “How can we use perception in arts and human sciences to justify the role of shared knowledge in the understanding of personal knowledge?”

    1. Hi, the KQ is fairly good, I’m just concerned with the use of the term ‘justify’, I’m not sure whether there is a state in which the role of shared knowledge requires justification, and I’m not sure on what basis any such justification could be made. Maybe you mean ‘explain’ rather than ‘justify’.

  29. Hi Daniel, thanks for the advice.
Do you know how I could use Economics as a Human Science subject, to use in this particular question? Any theories which could be particularly explored.

    1. Hi if Econs does not resonate for you (if you can;t find appropriate RLS), then switch to an AoK which does allow you to formulate RLS. You should really use an AoK which is easy for you to access.

  30. Mr Trump,

Thank you for all of your life-saving advice !

I’m confused as to the KQs themselves. The IB guide says we need 3/4. That being said, we need a main KQ and then the other minor KQs integrate themselves in the body of the essay, right ?

Furthermore, can my main KQ simply be ” How does and to what extent does shared knowledge shape personal knowledge ” ?

    Thanks in advance !

    1. Your reading of the IB Guide is absolutely correct. Your KQ is OK, however “how does” and “to what extent” are probably better treated as 2 separate KQ’s. Further, you may want to try to be more specific when using the term ‘shape’. Try to find terms which are more specific, and allow you to srticulate what you mean by ‘shape’ with greater clarity.

  31. Hey Daniel!
Does my introduction have to include my two knowledge claims as this is what I have been told by my TOK instructor. Furthermore, could you tell me what exactly I must have in my introduction?

Lastly, thank you very much for the analysis you have provided for each PT

    1. Your Knowledge Claims should certainly appear very early in your essay as you will be exploring these throughout the essay. In most essays the KC’s would be in the Introduction. The Introduction should introduce your approach to the essay, it should explain the key Knowledge Question, and associated Knowledge Claims, and give a very brief overview of your structure.

    1. Hi, if you want me to read your essay, I very much recommend to all students that they consult with their ToK Teacher when it comes to reading essays in advance of submission. Your ToK teacher knows you, and as such they are best placed to give appropriate and insightful advice.

  32. Sir,

You mentioned the following advice to someone on this thread

” Think about history in terms of the process of labelling, recording and interpreting history (historiography). Think about what type of experience is labelled as historic knowledge, whilst other experiences are not given this label, and why this may be”.

I just wanted to know where this fit in with the whole Shared & Personal Knowledge perspectives because its such an interesting example !

    1. It arises from exploring whether personal and shared knowledge are better understood as being externally set or internally interpreted, if I understand history as a process of production, rather than an outcome of record, then it becomes a more fluid and dynamic knowledge system. Whether that links to shared and personal knowledge very much depends upon the definition of shared and personal knowledge being used.

  33. Thank you very much for this insightful article, Daniel.
I’m planning out my essay right now, and I was wondering if you can give me your opinion.

My KQ is: Is the flow of knowledge, from personal to shared, and vice versa, equally strong?

The two AoK I’m thinking of using are Religion and Art.
For Religion, I’d like to investigate how personal knowledge acquired through one’s faith can be challenged or altered by the shared knowledge within the surrounding culture (of a different religion that is).
For Arts, I’m looking into a couple of art movements, specifically Modernism and Post modernism, and exploring how the thoughts of an individual influenced the collective.

    What do you think?

    1. Your AoK’s and real life situations are excellent. Your chosen KQ may be a little difficult to reach a conclusive position on. You will need to be clear as to how you are measuring ‘strength’, best of luck, and enjoy !

      1. Do I have to reach a conclusive position that favors one over the other? Or can I say that after the investigation and exploration conducted, it can be said the the flow of knowledge is equally strong in both directions?
And any suggestions on what could be a measure of strength of knowledge flow?

        Thank you!

  34. Sir, here’s my KQ ” What causes a transference of knowledge from within a community to an individual in the HS and in the arts ? “.

I basically want to say to see why there is a need to for the SK to “shape” the PK.

Do you reckon this sounds good ?

    1. Hi, your KQ sounds interesting. You have used the word “causes” in your KQ, you will need to be careful that you don’t get too bogged down in specific contexts when discussing causes – try to keep it wide, and open ended.

  35. Hi Mr.Trump! Thank you for beneficial information. Your article was very helpful. I am using The Arts and Human Sciences as my areas of knowledge. For know, I am stuck in human sciences. Can you please give some advices on this area of knowledge? Thank you in advance!

    1. The Human Sciences lends itself well to this question. As I explained in my article you could look at processes like socialisation, conformity, obedience, consumption, memory etc. You could look at both PK leading to SK, and SK leading to PK, using real life examples. If you really can’t write about this AoK just choose another one, choose one which allows you to exemplify the question.

  36. Hi Mr. Trump,
I found your article very beneficial as it has helped me to better understand the question.
One of the AOKs I have taken is religious knowledge systems, but i am having a hard time in finding an appropriate real life situation. Mind helping me out? Thanks in advance!

  37. Thank you for the amazing website !

Could you please expand your views (specifically on the embarrassment thing ) on the following being a counter-argument , it looks interesting but I’m afraid I’m a little lost on its meaning.

” This research shows that social norms influence personal knowledge & therefore individual behaviour. However, it could be argued (as counterpoint) that the ‘individualised knowledge’ of difference (maybe embarrassment etc) is changing behaviour, which then effects the whole group / shared knowledge”

    1. I was referring to the research work into conformity such as Asch’s Line Experiment (majority influence), or Moscovici’s colour slides (minority influence) – I was considering the range of reasons why people may conform (embarrassment , or normative social influence) might be one of these reasons. If I were to write the essay I might explore whether these factors constitute personal or shared knowledge.

  38. Hi! Thank You for this post it really helps.
If I were to take one or two ideas/ real life situations which you have discussed here and use integrate them into my essay, would there be any problem (would the IB catch me!) for taking an idea and using it? Is there any way I can reference you or put your name in my bibliography, If there is please tell me a way I can cite your help? I am not sure if I can cite this website (wordpress) as it is an unreliable source. Please help

    1. You are free to develop the ideas and put them into your essay, as long as you don’t cut and paste then you haven’t done anything wrong. The more that you can develop your own ideas the better.

  39. Thank you so much for this article! I want to make most of my claims on the thesis that shared and personal knowledge enter into a sort of symbiotic cycle, but I want to make sure that I don’t disregard the title. How do you think I could go about this? Could I make claims for symbiosis and counter claims for shared to personal?

    1. To take the position that sk & pk are symbiotic sounds excellent, obviously you will still have to consider arguments for & against the separation of pk & sk. Whether you are in danger of disregarding the title really depends upon the balance of your essay, your ToK teacher is the best person to refer to & get advice from on this.

  40. Hello,
I have a question about this topic. Can I use 2 areas of knowledge – mathematic and natural sciences, and explain that numbers influence our life – we believe in bad luck 13, our lucky numbers etc and also about DNA discovery – gene teraphy, pregnancy tests and its ethical issues?
    Regards,
